A boot leg is narrower in the knee than in the leg opening. Generally, bootcut jeans will have a leg opening of anywhere between 17 and 20 inches.
As with all jeans, they should fit comfortably around your waist. For a mid-rise bootcut jean, the jean should fit just below your belly button. The leg should fit snug from your thigh to your knee and then flare out from below the knee to the hem.
Bootcut jeans generally have a slightly tapered thigh and then widen from the knee to the hem. Straight fit jeans essentially are the same length from thigh to hem, so they tend to be more fitted around the thigh than on the knees or lower legs.
Flare Jeans tend to have a looser and wider fit than a bootcut which tapers at the hip and thigh.
